Schwarz, Hugo


Hugo, son of Clara and Otto Schwartz, was born on October 9, 1916, in the city of Cologne, Germany.He was a member of the pioneering youth movement “Werkleute” (Labormen). When the Nazis came to power in Germany, he left for training in Luxembourg in 1933 and in 1935 he made aliyah and lived in Ashdot Yaakov, where he was a member until 1939. During the bloody riots of 1936-1939 he was a member of the Hagana field companies in the Jordan Valley. When he left the kibbutz he worked as a driver in Haifa, married a wife and prepared to build his home in Israel.
As a member of the “Galgal” transport company, he volunteered in December 1947 to transport soldiers and weapons in the Haganah service, and from March 1948 served as an ambulance driver enlisted in the headquarters of the Haifa District. During the conquest of Jaba on 11 Tamuz, July 18, 1948, Hugo fell. Two weeks later his body was found and brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Haifa.
