Schuaretz, Nathan (Herbert, the Rebbe)


Was born on July 14, 1921, in Vienna, the capital of Austria, where he studied his future in creative life and hard labor in Israel. Who immigrated to Australia in 1938. He spent two years in Kiryat Anavim and was one of the first to redeem the land of Hamadia in 1942. Nathan was known for his dedication to the field of agriculture and mechanics, To the Jewish Legions of the British Army and served in Egypt, and with the establishment of the Jewish Brigade he joined her, fought in Italy, and continued his service in Belgium Holland After returning to work in the kibbutz, where he found the contents of his life, he joined the Golani Brigade and joined the battles of Tirat Zvi and Jenin, Participated in Operation Dekel in the conquest of Nazareth. In November 1948 he was transferred with his brigade to the Negev. In Operation Horev, the expulsion of the Egyptian army from Israel, the Golani Brigade was tasked with creating a deception in the western wing of the front, before the main effort in the eastern wing began. On the night of December 22-23, 1948, the brigade captured the 86th post north of Khan Younis, threatening the road and the railway, and gave the impression that the intention was to cut off the Egyptian forces in the Gaza Strip. The Egyptians reacted with a fierce counter-attack with the help of artillery and armor, and under enemy pressure the Golani fighters were forced to retreat. In this battle he fell on the day of the 21st of Kislev 5709 (December 23, 1948). At first he was buried on the border and from there his body was transferred to eternal rest in the cemetery in his group, Hamadia. His memory was immortalized in the memory book of the Harmonium Group (Hamdiya) in 1949 and at the foundation of a cultural center in Hamadia in memory of three of his comrades who fell in the War of Independence.
