Schlesinger, Michael


Son of Sarah and Shmuel. He was born on January 1, 1923 in Vienna, capital of Austria. He immigrated to Palestine in 1939 as part of the Youth Aliyah. On May 1, 1943 he was aboard the ship “Arinapura” in a convoy of naval vessels en route from Alexandria, Allied invasion of Europe. In the bombing by German planes, the ship sank and one hundred and forty of the company’s soldiers drowned with her, Michael among them. In the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, a ship-shaped monument was erected in memory of the missing, and next to it is a water pool with the names of the fallen engraved on the bottom.
