Sasson, Ofer

Son of Jacqueline and Pinchas, was born on 28 August 1962 in Hadera. Ofer studied at the “Ahad Ha’am” elementary school and the general high school in Hadera. From childhood, he stood out as a gifted, serious, introverted and sensitive student. He moved away from the pranks of his school friends. Ofer was diligent, clinging to the tasks he had taken upon himself. He found great interest in the animal world, the birds, and the insects. When he was in sixth grade, Ofer deepened his view of nature and life. He was active in the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, at a field school in Kibbutz Ma’agan Michael, and participated in the Birds’ Circle. Despite his serious and introverted character, Ofer developed a subtle sense of humor. He invented surprising language sharpens in writing and conversation, stood out for his creative talents, painted well and wrote poems and poems, expressing his feelings about the surroundings. When he was 13 years old, in preparation for his Bar Mitzvah celebration, Ofer approached his grandfather, who prepared him for aliyah to the Torah and instructed him in religious observance. The connection between tradition and his love of the land was part of his worldview. As he grew older, his interest in knowledge of the country increased. He was adhering to his faith in the Jewish people’s right to the Greater Land of Israel. Two subjects were loved by him: biology and the Land of Israel, and in both of them Ofer dealt a lot. In the 12th grade, when he was about to enlist in the IDF, he took an active part in the Nachal group, which was intended to settle in the Givon area near Jerusalem. Ofer wrote a work on the history of ancient Caesarea, and at the same time wrote a work on the ant of harvest. In his search for material on Caesarea, Ofer volunteered for excavation work carried out by an archeological expedition of the Hebrew University in the summer of 1979. In the last night of the night he would ride a bicycle from his home in Hadera to Caesarea, and in the quiet he characterized his work in excavations, Caesarea. Ofer volunteered for a pre-military service in the settlement of Givon, but for social reasons, his nucleus disintegrated, and Ofer found himself serving in the Armored Corps, and at first he was disappointed, and even bitterly expressed His disappointment, but he concluded, “The armor is also strong in the IDF,” and he fulfilled his duties with dedication. In November 1980, Ofer was recruited, trained in basic training, took a number of courses, excelled in them. At this stage he hoped he would be sent to the Armored Corps course, but his commanders preferred to send him to professional courses. He moved up the ranks and reached the rank of sergeant. Ofer participated in the Peace for Galilee War. After the war, he was assigned to deal with the renovation of the mediation tanks that had been damaged in the battles. He did this work with dedication and skill, and his battalion commander asked to be offered as a candidate for an officer’s course, but this time Ofer refused the offer. He was immersed in his inner, creative world. He painted a lot, looked at nature, and in his work found expression in his internal skills and feelings. On April 3, 1983, Ofer was killed when his car collided head-on with a car in front of him, He was 20 years old when he was killed, and he was laid to rest in Hadera’s military cemetery.
