Sash, Dror

Son of Nili and Shmuel, was born on September 17, 1962 in Jerusalem. His parents lived in the “Zionist Youth Farm” near San Simon and were involved in the education of youth. The eldest son was Dror and the first child in the family, handsome and surrounded by relatives who protected him with love. Dror grew up in a Yaffa environment, in a magnificent landscape, immersed in lawns and a vegetable garden. The family and the environment in which they grew left their mark on the development of Dror. When he was two years old, his family moved to Ashdod, where he studied in the first three grades of elementary school. In early childhood, he was characterized by qualities of independent thought and scientific curiosity. He loved animals, including insects and birds, which he brought from the field to determine their nature. During his first years in the Ashdod school he learned to play the flute. His parents cultivated his natural curiosity and imagination. From Ashdod the family moved to Arad. Dror continued his studies at the “Ye’elim” elementary school and was absorbed by the children. At the end of the first decade of his life, the book world opened up to him, and he used to change a book every day at the public library. In time a special relationship was established between him and the librarian. In 1973 his parents left for Cape Town, South Africa. Dror found himself in a new society, in a foreign environment whose language he did not know. At first he had difficulty in his studies, but he soon became famous for his skills. He excelled in his studies, played chess well, and even represented his school in the competitions of the League of Schools in South Africa. Dror used to say that an Israeli child should prove himself to be the best, and in this approach he tried to succeed in every challenge he set for himself in his school. After achieving chess, he found no more satisfaction in him and became interested in other subjects, especially scientific ones. On his own he began to study electronics, and his room became a kind of laboratory filled with mechanical and electronic parts. Sometimes Dror even managed to repair domestic electronic devices. Like the chess game, he was caught up in the tennis game. Like all his friends in the class, Dror continued to pursue this sport, and within a relatively short time he managed to make progress. Dror had various hobbies: chess, tennis, electronics, long conversations with friends, table tennis and sailing in a boat he had acquired. He also found time and pleasure to care for his younger brother. In 1976 the family returned to Israel, and Dror returned to study at the Arad Comprehensive School. Again he worked hard to be absorbed in the company of the students and achieve the class level. The conditions in the school in Israel were different from those in South Africa, but he managed to cope with the new reality. He chose to study in the computer track, because in this profession he saw possibilities of expression and progress that suited him. During his vacations, Dror joined the “Youth of Science”, went on to study at two summer courses, and during private school visits privately visited Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva universities to run programs that he designed outside the framework of the program. In the 11th grade, Dror was introduced to the guitar as a hobby, and he was also caught in full force, and in two years Dror learned to play and play in his guitar. She was his companion in all his wanderings, training, and operations. Dror completed his studies with honors, especially in the real professions. It was clear to him that after completing his service in the IDF, he would go to study computers at the Technion in Haifa, and at the request of the IDF, he was recruited several months later and was set for November 1980. After much hesitation he decided to choose to serve in the Armored Corps. He studied the secrets of his performance, and looked for ways to improve it. Then he went onIn the course of the officers’ training courses, which ended in February 1982 and took place in the course of Armored Corps officers, Dror was seen as a quick, stubborn, professional, perfectionist and responsible person. About a week before completing his training as commander of the tank division, the Peace for Galilee War broke out and his unit moved to Lebanon. For 72 consecutive hours the unit fought, forging its way and advancing along the western axis of the Bekaa Valley. On June 9, 1982, Dror was killed and brought to rest in the military cemetery in Ra’anana. He left behind his parents, sister and brother. He was 20 years old. Dror was awarded a commendation, and this is a description of the incident: “Lieutenant-Colonel Dror Shosh, who served as a liaison officer in a tank crew during the Peace for Galilee war, was a leading team in the battles of Zein and Ein Atina, During the assault of Syrian tanks, contributed to the achievement of the objectives of the battalion and the brigade, and the team was very skilled and professional, Courage and great devotion. “In memory of Dror, his father wrote and published a book of poems called” Like a bird for a wanderer like a bird to fly. “
