Salomon, Yitzhak (Chaki, Paz)

Yitzhak (Chaki, Paz), son of Hannah-Yehudit and Avraham-Yosef Salomon, was born in 1926 in Safed and as a baby he was orphaned from his father. His teachers at the local school praised his perception, his memory and his knowledge (especially in the Bible; he always had a verse ready, original or adapted to the needs of the hour). He was drafted to the Nutras, and during the two and a half years of service in the Upper Galilee, he saved his meager salary for his future needs. During the Arab unrest before the UN General Assembly Resolution, he spent nights guarding the positions of the Haganah and when the riots broke out, he went out with his comrades for protection even though as the only son of a widow was exempt from combat duty. He volunteered to defend the Jewish Quarter in the Old City. He stood bravely in the face of the Arab attacks and forced them to withdraw. In defending the Yeshivat Porat Yosef, he threw several grenades at the enemy until he was hit by a sniper bullet in his head. He was taken to the hospital where he died of his wounds on 28 Kislev, 11.12.1947. He was buried on Har Hazeisim in Jerusalem. His name was engraved on the monument erected in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in memory of those who perished in the Jewish Quarter and the memory of soldiers who fell in the battle for Jerusalem and were buried on Har Hazeisim.
