Salamon, Mordechai (Marco)


Was born in January 1928 in Damascus, the capital of Syria. Twice he tried to cross the border on foot, was caught and tortured in Damascus prison despite his youth, but the torture did not deter him, and for the third time in 1944 he managed to evade the guards on both sides of the border. Mordechai became a member of the “Yiftach” Brigade, and took part in all the battalion and brigade operations during the winter of 1948 in the Upper Galilee. He participated in the battles for the liberation of Safed and its environs, where he fell near Ein Zeitim on the 24th of Nissan,May 3, 1948. He was buried among a few lone trees on Mount Canaan. On the 27th of Elul 5709 (21.9.1949) he was put to rest at the military cemetery in Nahalat Yitzhak.
