Sachs, Shmuel-Yehuda

Son of-Zalman and Esther. He was born on Wednesday, March 4, 1930 in Jerusalem, the seventh generation in the country of a family of rabbis and dayanim, and was one of the founders of New Jerusalem, including Rabbi Hillel Rivlin, the first rabbi of the Ashkenazi community. He moved to Yeshivat Etz Chaim in Bnei Brak. At the age of fourteen and a half, he joined the religious kibbutz of Sde Eliyahu, where he joined the Haganah. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he returned to besieged Jerusalem and, as a member of the Haganah, participated in many important battles (such as Sheikh Jarrah, Notre Dame, Mount Zion and Katamon). Even during battle he did not forget his parents: he would save food from his mouth and bring him home; He even gave his favorite cigarettes to his father. At the end of the War of Independence, he continued to serve in the IDF as a liaison sergeant, where he completed his own studies until he passed the matriculation exams, was accepted as a student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and studied geology and mineralogy. Although he was an adult, he participated in training with all his friends, and on the 10th of Tishrei, 5710 (10.9.1956) he fell in battle near Dweima. He was brought to rest on the Mount of Rest in Givat Shaul in Jerusalem. The lines of his figure are presented in a booklet that was published in memory of those who fell in the battle of Dweima by their comrades-in-training.
