Rubinfeld, Dr. Gideon


Gideon, son of Hannah and Yehoshua, was born on April 17, 1938, on Mount Scopus and grew up in Jerusalem. He attended elementary school “Arlozorov” and then continued high school in “high school” and graduated cum laude when he was seventeen. Gideon was a serious boy and considered his approach to life. Each task he took upon himself was performed in perfect and precise fashion. He was very attached to his parents, who nurtured him and raised him with warmth and love. He was naturally friendly and friendly and always willing to help others. From his youth he was a music lover and played many instruments: piano, violin, flute and mouth harmonica. He devoted his free time to sports as a hobby, was a member of the Tennis Association and also had plenty of swimming and exercise. In addition to this, he was a member of the United Movement. In 1955 he began studying at the University of Jerusalem as part of the Academic Reserve. He studied for a year at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and then went on to study medicine. He completed his studies in 1962 and interned for a year at Assaf Harofeh Hospital. In 1964, Gideon was ordained as a doctor of medicine. Throughout his studies he worked as a teacher to support himself. During his studies he met Shoshana, married her in 1958, and together they continued to study at the medical school and even to work, in order to support themselves and the children who were born to them. Despite his many occupations, he had a family and an exemplary father and always found time to help raise and educate the children. Gideon was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in early January 1964, where he was awarded the rank of lieutenant, and was assigned to serve as a doctor in an armored unit and was then transferred to a recruits’ base and served as a senior medical officer. In 1966, Gidon volunteered to serve for another year in the career army, and in 1967 he was discharged from the IDF with the rank of captain. After completing his regular service, he continued to specialize for five years in Assaf Harofeh Hospital in the Department of Ophthalmology and was awarded the title of specialist in ophthalmology. He opened an advanced eye clinic in Rishon LeZion and at the same time devoted his time to treating patients in the Rehovot clinic and continued to study at the hospital. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Gideon Rofe was in an armor formation crossing the canal. On the 19th of Tishrei 5734 (19.10.1973) in the area of ​​the Davarsuar airport, he was hit and killed in the bombing of Egyptian MiGs. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He left behind a wife and three children – Irit, Eran and Amit. Mother and sister. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the commander of the unit wrote: “Captain Dr. Rubinfeld Gideon, of blessed memory, was known in his company as one of the best and most dedicated doctors. The Jerusalem High School published a pamphlet in memory of the fallen students, including remarks about Gideon’s character; His battalion in the Six-Day War also published a pamphlet containing things about it; In the department where he worked, at Assaf Harofeh Hospital, a medical library was established in his name dedicated to the field of ophthalmology.
