Rotstein, Shaya


Son of Hirsch and Chana. Born on 19.1.1939 in Warsaw, Poland, where he completed his studies in an elementary school and three years of study at the Gymnasium. He was a member of the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement and was active in the Society Culture Club. In 1957 he immigrated to Israel with his family. Shaya enlisted in the IDF in early February 1959 and was assigned to the Artillery Corps, a quiet and dedicated soldier with great courage, who fulfilled his duties to the satisfaction of his commanders, who even recommended him for a medal. After his discharge from the regular service, he worked as a mechanical locksmith at the “Polgat” company and established a home in Israel. He also completed another year of high school. During his free hours he read a lot of books and played a harmonica in it, detailing Balalaika. During the reserve service he participated in the Six-Day War, and even underwent a professional conversion to a moving artillery. On the 9th of Av 5729 (24.7.1969), he fell in battle and placed a wife and two children in eternal mourning in the cemetery in Kiryat Gat. His courage and devotion to the goal made him a symbol of his commanders and comrades in arms. “
