Roth, Danny (Menachem)


Son of Miriam and Aryeh, he was born on January 11, 1961 in Pardes Hannah. His parents, survivors of the extermination camps in Europe, immigrated to Israel after the war and settled in Pardes Hannah. When Danny was one year old, his family moved to Nazareth Illit, where he grew up and was educated. In August 1979 Danny joined the IDF and served with the paratroopers. He underwent basic training, a parachuting course and a surfing course on cliffs and was first promoted to corporal and then sergeant. In January 1981, Danny completed an officers’ course. He excelled in his roles as commander and guide, until in February 1982 he was seriously injured in a road accident. Danny was hospitalized and it was three months before he recovered from his wounds. Ten days before the outbreak of the Peace for Galilee War, he was stationed in the Golani Brigade. Due to his state of health, Danny was not posted as a commander on the front, but rather as the person in charge of the evacuation of casualties. On 3 Tamuz, June 24, 1982, Danny was with his unit in the area of ​​Hamdun in Lebanon, when a shell hit the APC he commanded. Danny was killed. He was 21 years old. After he was killed, Danny was promoted to lieutenant. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Upper Nazareth. Danny left behind his parents and sister. The Defense Minister wrote in a letter of condolence to his family: “Lieutenant Menachem Roth gave his life for his homeland, served as an evacuation platoon commander in the infantry battalion, and was very popular with the soldiers”.
