Rosenzweig, Asher-Yosef (Yossele)
Son of Shoshana and Chaim, was born on the 27th of Tevet 5761 (27.12.1920) in the city of Pabianitz, Poland. When he was five, he immigrated to Israel with his parents and studied at the Tachkemoni School in Tel Aviv. Was an excellent athlete from his youth, an excellent swimmer. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he was one of the first to respond to the call of the Jewish Agency to enlist in the British army and participated in battles in Egypt, Libya, Greece and Crete. After the terrified retreat of the British from Greece he remained stuck there with many Jewish soldiers, but managed to avoid the German captivity, returned to Israel and rejoined the ranks of the fighters. After five years of service in the British army he was released and returned home. In his great concern for his parents, who was devoted to them with Lev and soul, he began to work as a butcher and supported them. Despite his difficult living conditions, he was always cheerful and humorous. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he immediately joined the campaign, as an active member of the Hagana, was sent to the Negev Brigade and was one of his first defenders. At the same time, his father died and, at the time of his separation from his old mother, he said that since he had passed through all seven sections of hell, he would surely return safe and sound from the battles for the homeland. Asher-Yosef fell in Bir-Asluj on Wednesday 11 June 1948. He was laid to rest at the Revivim military cemetery.
