Rosenfeld, Yehuda (Jan)

Yehuda, son of Golda and Shmuel, was born in 1911 in Hungary, where he received a high school education. He Immigrated to Israel in 1939. He settled in Haifa, worked in carpentry in Haifa Bay and was a member of the Communist Party. Yehuda was active in the “Hagana” and took a course in divisional commanders. After the UN General Assembly Resolution on November 29, 1947, he volunteered for the army and participated in guarding positions, serving in one of the Carmeli Brigade battalions, taking part in the battle for Acre. Yehuda was modest, brave, fearless, willing to volunteer for any action. He was in command of the Tarshicha outpost with another friend, and managed to inform the headquarters of the severity of the situation, “Beware, they are coming.” He thus saved dozens of soldiers for safe detachment. Yehuda fell in the Tarshiha outpost on 8 Tishrei 5709 (11 October 1948). The next day, Yehuda was found with the phone still in his hand. Yehuda was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Nahariya. He was survived by his wife whom he had married two months before his fall.
