Rosenblatt, Menachem (Mendel)

Son of Hannah and Zvi. Was born in 1893 in Ukraine, Russia. In his parents’ home he received a traditional education and absorbed the love of the Land of Israel and a great fondness for Zionism from his father, who gave him a traditional education. At the age of fourteen he lost his father, began running the flour mill his father had left behind and supported the family with honor. In 1913 he immigrated to Israel and his first place in the country was Karkur, where he did all the fieldwork: sowing, harvesting and threshing. During his stay in Karkur, the Turkish authorities issued an order requiring the members of Karkur to send four “hired” wagons to carry supplies to the Turkish army in the desert. The order raised anxiety in the colony that in the past a few of the expedition had returned, and those returning had lice and typhoid. A resident whose body was very weak after a long period of fever fell. Then Menachem stood up and said, “I will go in his place,” and so he did. Luckily he returned safely from the journey and later moved to Kfar Yehezkel and was one of the first settlers in the moshav. Among his friends and acquaintances, he was known for his modesty and simple manner, the man of the living labor who came to his own hands and took out his bread from the land. He married a wife and had a son but his wife died. He later married a second wife and had two more sons. On 8 Tishrei, March 13, 1937, Menachem was killed while on guard duty. He was brought to eternal rest in Kfar Yechezkel. He left a wife and three sons. His name was immortalized in the book of Kfar Yehezkel, 25 Years of Humanity and Enterprise”.
