Rosenberg, Solomon (Shimon)

Son of Malka and Aharon-Leibush. He was born in 1880 in the town of Kalusz, Poland. He immigrated to London, where he volunteered for the Jewish Legion, the 38th Battalion of the King’s Rifles, together with the Gdud, in order to participate in the conquest of the Turks. In the beginning of October 1918, the battalion conducted a difficult journey on foot from the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem, escorted by Turkish POWs, and many of the soldiers fell ill, including Shimon. On the day of Tu B’Shvat (21.10.1918), he died of his illness and was brought to rest. He was buried in the British military cemetery in Deir al-Balah. He left a wife in London and parents in Poland. His memory is mentioned in “Yizkor” of the Jabotinsky Institute and the book “With the Jewish Legions in Eretz Israel”.
