Rosenbaum, Zalman
Son of Israel Moshe. He was born in 1915 in Poland. In 1924 he immigrated to Eretz Israel with his family, who first settled in the German Colony of Sarona near Tel Aviv and two years later moved to Kfar Sava. In this colony he spent his childhood and youth, and there he also worked with his father and brothers as a plumber and as a locksmith. He was an innocent, kind-hearted boy, simple in manner, thorough in his work, considerate yet daring. Eventually, he joined the Shomrim Association and volunteered to go to the Negev with a group of oil drillers. In this position he had the reputation of a responsible and courageous guard. Thanks to his lofty qualities he was admired and accepted by all. After spending a long time in the Negev and Ben-Shemen he was sent to guard and training positions. As an experienced guard and as an excellent shooter, he imparted his knowledge to his students in the boarding school, and liked everything there too. On the 25th of Tevet, 16.1.1939, in the early hours of the morning, when he was on guard duty in the Ben Shemen forest, he and two of his comrades noticed a suspicious Arab. They chased him, he pulled them into the ambush of a gang. During the battle, one of the guards was hurt and Zalman went to help. Then a bullet hit him in the head and he was killed. He was buried in the Nahalat Yitzhak cemetery among his friends in the Haganah. A list in his memory was published in the booklet “How Friends Fell” and in the daily newspapers.
