Romerstein, Israel

A guard at Yavne’el in the Lower Galilee. He was known for his dedication to the role and courage. One morning after a guard night, he was called out to catch robbers who stole a pair of mules from one of the peasants. He went out on his horse to the Wadi Pijaz near the settlement, crossed the Jordan, and after he caught the bandits on top of a hill, they exchanged gunfire and one of the bullets hit his horse and killed her. Israel barricaded himself behind the horse and continued to fire until reinforcements arrived, apprehending the robbers and returning the pair of mules to their owners. Israel continued his guard duty in the area. On the 20th of Cheshvan (October 26, 1918), he was killed in the Kinneret colony by a kick from a horse. His name was immortalized in “Hashomer Digest” and in “Ruach u’veChayal”.
