Reichman, Chaim (Karl)
The only son of Hannah and Zvi-Ze’ev (Herman) was born on 26.10.1928 in the village of Vico de Sos, Bukovina, Romania, and studied in an elementary school in one of the nearby villages. During the Second World War, the Germans rounded up all the surrounding Jews in the Radautzi district and from there were brutally deported to Transnistria in 1941. Haim’s family was also among the exiles. The father died of typhus. The son also fell ill but healed. In 1944 he was liberated with many orphans from the hell of Transnistria, moved to Bucharest and returned to school. On December 22, 1944, he immigrated to Israel. He was educated at a children’s company in Kibbutz Dan and specialized in agriculture in general and in fruit trees in particular. In 1946 he moved to Herzliya as an agricultural worker. In March 1948, during the War of Independence, he enlisted and served in the Alexandroni Brigade. Was a diligent young man devoted to his mother, who remained in Romania and said to bring her to him. In his letters to her, he expressed his faith in a better future for both his family and his people. With the entry of the legion forces into the war, the situation of Jerusalem worsened and the road to it was cut off by the legion of Latrun. The breakthrough was planned for Operation son of-Nun A, and its battalion will reinforce the 7th Brigade for this mission. The forces of the battalion, which were assigned to conquer Latrun, encountered better enemy forces and had to retreat. This battle fell on the 17th of Iyar 5708 (May 26, 1948). On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) he was transferred to the eternal military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
