Raz (Reiz), Eliezer

Eliezer ben Dov and Puah was born on the 17th of Tamuz, July 1, 1923, in Poritzk, Poland. He immigrated to Israel with his family in 1931. Eliezer absorbed the spirit of Zionism in his home and in the Hebrew school he attended. He married and raised a family, was optimistic and kind. He was a Haganah member from his youth. In 1945, he completed a MM course and was sent to instruct the course of the commanders of the Haganah patrols. In 1946, Eliezer was drafted into the Hagana’s permanent army, as a reconnaissance officer in the Tel Aviv District. As part of his position, Eliezer commanded the Hachash Rangers course in Tel Aviv and toured Arab villages in the Tel Aviv area in order to prepare a planning portfolio for each village. Eliezer took many risks in fulfilling his duties and contributed quite a bit to securing Tel Aviv and its environs. When the War of Independence broke out, Eliezer joined Givati’s 54th Battalion as a battalion intelligence officer and took part in the heavy battles to stop the Arab forces in the south.In one of the battles on Hill 105 near Kibbutz Negba, Eliezer was injured, but returned to service after a short time. Eliezer was drafted into the IDF in February 1948. At the end of his service, he volunteered for the career army and was promoted to the rank of captain. In the course of time he was appointed deputy commander of the Civil Defense in the Dan District and was awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel. The head of the Civil Defense wrote to Eliezer: “Your professional knowledge, initiative and energy have always been a great help to me.” In the course of his 27 years of service in the IDF, Eliezer took part in all of Israel’s systems and received commendations and great respect for his work. His close friends in the IDF loved him and his kindness and found him attentive and willing to advise and help in everything. On the 23rd of Adar 2, March 25th,1976), Eliezer fell during his service. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. He left behind a wife – Hattie, Son of – Moti, and Daughter of – Rivka
