Ravin, Shlomo-Zalman

Ravin, Shlomo-Zalman

Son of Esther and Tuvia, was born in 1917 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, and immigrated with his family to Eretz Israel in 1922. From his childhood, he knew work and poverty, and even when his parents settled in Ramat Hasharon, Shlomo was active among the local youth, organized the small branch of “Hanoar Haoved” and devoted himself to improving his residence (which was set up in an abandoned coop) and to his cultural activities. Due to the economic distress, the family moved to Tel Aviv, where Shlomo worked in a bakery and in the evenings was one of the activists in the “HaNoar HaOved” group. After a few years the family returned to Ramat Hasharon and Shlomo worked hard in baking and began taking up public space. At the beginning of the War of Independence he was given the burden of supporting his elderly parents and his own family: a wife and two children. Considering his situation as a single child and providing for two families, he was exempt from conscription, but his duty to maintain his place of residence is correct. When the situation on the fronts became worse, especially in the Sharon area, he could no longer remain in the rear when all his friends and his age were at the front and some of them had already fallen. He enlisted in full service in the army, served in the Alexandroni Brigade, and fulfilled his duty loyally, until the attack on Ramat Hakovesh fell on January 7, 1949. On the day of the 15th of Shvat 5709 (February 15, 1949) To rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
