Rauch, Mordechai (Monia)


Mordechai was born on the 6th of Teves, January 25, 1922 in the town of Sanok, Galicia, Poland. Mordechai volunteered for the Red Army, fought the Germans, and after the establishment of the Polish army in Russia joined them and served there until the end of the war. His family was executed by the Germans. In desperation he deserted and set out on the “Bericha route” through Germany, Austria, and Italy until his departure for Palestine on the ” Hessen “in 1946. He joined Kibbutz Yad Mordechai for three months, then moved to Petah Tikva, where his only sister worked. He volunteered for the Palmach in 1947. Mordechai was sent to the Upper Galilee, served in the Yiftach Brigade, attached to the platoon at Kibbutz Lehavot Habashan and participated in all the battles in the Galilee. Mordechai was killed in the second attack on Nebi Yusha on the 11th of Nissan, April 20, 1948. After his body was found on the battlefield, Mordechai was brought to the Nevi-Yoshe cemetery on the 11th of Iyar, May 20th 1948.
