Potash, Remy (Remick)

Son of Dora and Pesach, was born on December 9, 1927, in Magdiel. After graduating from elementary school and studying for two years in the following classes, he moved to Kadouri Agricultural School. In his parents’ house, he suckled love for the land. He helped with all the jobs in the farm and did not suffer any disorder. Rami also excelled in his studies and was aware of public problems. After completing his studies at the Kadouri School, he returned to work at his parents’ farm. After a hard day’s work, he gave his time to public work, especially for cultural matters. He was appointed secretary general of the General Zionists in Magdiel, and he was given an organizational role by the farmers in the local general bureau. He assumed these duties only on the condition that he was given the opportunity to continue farming. Rami was a member of the Haganah, responsible for the Slikim, where the precious weapon was hidden. He fulfilled his role with confidence and faith. Everyone liked him and appreciated his modesty and character. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he volunteered before he was called to enlist. He was a lieutenant colonel, later a sergeant in the Alexandroni Brigade. With the entry of the Arab Legion into the fighting, the situation in Jerusalem deteriorated and the road to it was cut off by the Legion system in Latrun. In an attempt to break through the road, Operation son of-Nun A was conducted. His battalion reinforced the 7th Brigade for this operation and was forced to conquer Latrun. The battalion encountered better enemy forces and had to retreat. In this battle he fell, on the day of the 16th of Iyar 5708 (May 25, 1948). His corpse was collected with the bodies of the rest of the Latrun victims, inside Wadi Tahn, and was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949).
