Popovitch, Zvi


Son of Azriel and Esther. He was born in Romania on the 6th of Tishrei, September 18, 1920. He served in the Hungarian army from 1942 to 1944. In 1948 he immigrated to Israel and was drafted into the IDF. He did not leave his army service until his last day, and reached the rank of major sergeant. He was devoted and loyal in an unusual way. He made every effort to succeed in the work, despite his limitations in his health. He suddenly died of an illness on the 24th of Av, August 18, 1968. He left a wife and two daughters. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. The base commander wrote, in a letter of condolence, to his wife, “I knew him personally for many years, and I can testify that he was always loved by all his commanders and soldiers … He was diligent, thorough, loyal and boundless, and took care of the camp just as a head of household looked after his home, and this will make it harder for us to forget him. ” After his death, an officers’ club was established, in his honor and memory, in the base where he served.
