Pohovsky, Ben-Zion (Theodore, Teddy)
Son of Ahuva and Aryeh, was born on November 13, 1922 in Tel Aviv. His father, a doctor, founded the first maternity hospital in Tel Aviv. Ben-Zion learned the use of a machine gun and commanded a machine gun team. He took part in the battles for the breakthrough to Jerusalem and on the Burma Road. On the 9th of June 1948 he stood at an outpost near Beit Susin near the Beza, and the enemy forces carried out a surprise attack with the aim of conquering the Beit Susin strongholds that protected the Burma Road. He helped cause considerable casualties to the enemy, but could not stand to see the suffering of a wounded person nearby and the medics could not reach him, and so Ben-Zion went to give him first aid, and was hit by an enemy bullet in the neck and he died on the spot on 2nd of Sivan (9.6.1948). He left behind a wife – Bella, and a daughter.
