Plonchik, Mordechai

A member of a family of rabbis. He was born in Vilna and received his first education in a “cheder.” When he was older, he was sent to continue his studies at the well-known yeshivas in Lithuania and during his last studies he was at the Baranovich Yeshiva in Poland. At the yeshiva he became known as an eloquent, quick-paced and profound understanding, which they were able to be in due course in Israel. However, the intensification of the Zionist movement and pioneering movement in Poland also gave its mark, despite the strong opposition of his family and the heads of the yeshiva went to the hachshara to immigrate to Eretz Israel. He immigrated to Israel in 1932 and after a period of working in agriculture, and in the building he moved to guard positions, where he showed vigilance and courage. He kept in the fields of Yokne’am and in other places where danger lay in wait for the Jewish settlers. With the outbreak of the bloody riots of 1936 he joined the “Guardians’ Union” and also the “Hagana” organization. He was a member of the “Haganah” who had been arrested by the British on October 1, 1939. He was sentenced to two years in prison and was imprisoned for two years after his release. Shortly after his release, with twenty-two of his comrades in a daring commando operation in the rear of the enemy, the mission of the SG was to sabotage the oil refineries in Tripoli under the Vichy government and thereby damage the activities of the German air force in the Middle East.
