Pitchon, Matityahu
Matityahu (Matteo) Pitchon, son of Luna and Yossi was born in 1926 in the port city of Thessaloniki, Greece. After the Nazi takeover of Greece, he was taken to concentration camp, was tortured in the Auschwitz and Dachau death camps and survived. After liberation, he moved to the Murky Camp in Landsberg, where he joined Betar and the Etzel and was sent to France. From there Matityahu sailed to Israel on the son of Hecht ship, was arrested for 13 months in a camp in Cyprus and arrived in Israel on April 20, 1948. Matityahu joined the Etzel fighters and moved with them to the Ramle sector, where he fell on the 24th of Iyar 5708, June 2, 1948, after he had lived in Israel for only six weeks. He was laid to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
