Perlmutter, Avitar (Avi)


Avi, son of Shifra and Noah Perlmutter, was born on March 14, 1931 in Tel Aviv. As a child he won a beauty prize in a children’s photo competition. After the UN General Assembly decided to divide the country into two states, he decided to go train for the army. In March 1948, Avi joined one of the Palmach battalions and due to his young age he was assigned the role of radio operator, but soon returned to his fellow fighters. He participated in the conquest of the Russian Compound, Katamon and Sheikh Jarrah. In the operation “Maccabi” onthe 2nd of Iyar, May 11, 1948, Avi was seriously injured and he did not recover from his wounds. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim.
