Peltz, Nachman (Penuel)

Nachman, son of Sarah and Yechiel Peltz (Penuel) was born on February 15, 1925 in Poland and immigrated with his parents to Israel in 1936. When he was 16 years old, Nachman enlisted in the British army, declaring that he was two years older. Nachman served with dedication and discipline as a soldier. During the Jewish Brigade exercises in Italy Nachman was wounded in the leg and after a year and a half of treatment in military hospitals he was discharged from the British army as a cripple and remained lame. So that he would not be a burden, Nachman went back to work alongside his father and devoted himself as an instructor and a platoon commander in the Irgun, nicknamed “Commander Panuel.” Nachman participated in actions against the British despite his disability, and during the War of Independence he continued to guide recruits and participate in actions against the Arabs until he fell in the Irgun attack on Ramalah on the 4th of Sivan, June 11, 1948. On 11 Iyar 5712 (6.5.1952) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul.
