Pell, Akiva (Kurt)


Son of Anna and Leo Pinchas Leib. He was born on October 30, 1923 in Vienna, the capital of Austria, and at the age of nine he helped support his family when he received a salary for his participation in the large “Temple” Choir in Vienna. After the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, he immigrated to Eretz Israel on the Adria with the first group of the Gordonia, a Viennese group. In spite of his young age, in the Second World Army enlisted in the British army. “It is our duty to take revenge on Hitler,” he said, He was assigned to the Transport Company 5C of the Transport Corps. Akiva served in Tobruk during the German siege on it and afterwards on the Al-Alamin front. On 23 Av, 6.8.1942, he was killed in a bombing. He is remember in the “Ha-Histadrut” newspaper, the “Pages of the Group” and the journal “Elite” – the youth movement “Aliyot”. His name was also commemorated in the book “Yizkor” by the Jabotinsky Institute, in the “Volunteer Book” and in the “Yearbook of the Journalists”.
