Peled, Avihu


Son of Meir and Frida. He was born on the 26th of Tevet 5726 (26.12.1945) in the Kinneret group. He spent his childhood in a group with children and youth. Was a quiet child who did not talk much and did not tend to stand out, because he was humble in all his actions which he did in great shape. He finished 12th grade in the middle school in Beit Yerah in the Jordan Valley, and in August 1963 he was drafted into the IDF and soon gained a high place in his unit because of his coolness and confidence. The name “Peled” stunned his personality, because he was never moved and because of difficulties he was not deterred. Was willing to help others, and during his arduous journeys he divided the burden. When he was released from the army, he returned home to his group and became very attached to the agriculture and to work, but from time to time he was called up for reserve duty. When the time of alert arrived before the Six-Day War, he was called up again and stuck to the goal tirelessly. He was talented as a squad leader and despite being younger than his subordinates he was competent and loyal to them and they were ready to follow his instructions. On the second day of the battles, he was 26 Iyar 5727 (6.6.1967) fell in a battle near the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem. The Rockefeller Museum was then under a shower of snipers from the wall and Abihu led his squad to the courtyard of the museum to take a stand and kill the snipers. But with the withdrawal of the force to carry out this task hit him a sniper’s bullet. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. In “Kinneret”, the bi-monthly journal of the Emek Hayarden Regional Council was commemorated. In the book “Marinas Gabro” of the Paratroopers Headquarters was devoted a page to his history and description of his last battle. In the book “Bimkomim”, which was published by the Union of Kibbutzim and Kibbutzim in memory of its fallen members, several pages were devoted to him and his books.
