Oved, Avraham (Avi)

Son of Sarah and Rachamim. Avraham (Avi) was born in Haifa on the 27th of Shvat, 572 (February 1952). His father, Rahamim, fell while serving in the reserves in the Tel a-Motaila incident. My father studied at “Ort Sprinzak” and “New High School”. He studied karate and had a second dan belt. In the Amishav neighborhood of Petah Tikva, he volunteered to train youth groups, and in the future he intended to work with marginalized youth. My father was a fighter, but very sensitive and kind. He always smiled and always joked. He was an avid fisherman and a pleasant socialite. In 1970 my father enlisted in the IDF and volunteered for the paratroopers. Since his childhood, homeland security and defense have been the dream of his life. He took part in the Yom Kippur War, in Operation Litani and in secret operational activities. In 1978, Avi volunteered for regular service in the Border Police and served in all fields, sectors, installations and operational companies. He liked the work so much that even when he was sick he went out to work, out of consideration for his friends who might be hurt. During the Peace for Galilee War, Avi moved with his unit to operations in Lebanon, with terrorist arrests, patrols and various operational activities. His concerned family promised to apply for transfer to the center. My father promised, but did not commit, and the proposals given him to serve in the center he rejected. On 21.6.1983, Sgt. Rishon Avi was wounded while he was on patrol in the Nabatiyeh / Arab al-Salim area, and terrorists opened fire from ambush towards the force, injuring his friends, rescuing his comrades, and bandaging another policeman who was seriously injured My father was thirty-one years old and he was buried in the Haifa cemetery and left a wife: Shoshana, two sons: Rami and Assaf, and two daughters from his previous marriage: Limor and Ayelet. “Every year a sports tournament is held in my father’s name
