Oppenheimer, Ernest

Son of Nathan. He was born in 1914 in the city of Cheltenham, Germany. Was a member of Hechalutz and immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1936. After undergoing a training period at the agricultural farm Misha Boria, he arrived at the Tel Yosef farm in the Jezreel Valley where Ernst worked in various jobs. He worked for two years in the stable and loved this work, where he continued to work until he joined the army. In 1941 he enlisted in the British Army and served in the Engineering Corps’ tractor unit. Humble and self-contained, Ernest was always gloomy. He bore with sorrow and pain the knowledge that his parents had perished in a concentration camp in Terezin. In his meetings and conversations with friends he told of his preparations to return to the agriculture immediately upon his release from the army, but he did not get it. His forces did not stand up to him and he committed suicide on 24 May 1946. He was buried at Kibbutz Tel Yosef.
