Omer, Karni

Daughter of Yehudit and Aryeh. She was born on May 4, 1945 in Jerusalem. She studied at the Nitzanim Elementary School in Ramat Gan and completed her studies at the Blich High School in Ramat Gan. Her father, a Revisionist, named her after Karni, the heroine of Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s novel. After graduating from high school she studied at the Kibbutzim College of Education. Her friends describe her as “one of the most beautiful girls in the city, a quiet, modest and industrious girl.” At the end of July 1965, Karni was drafted into the IDF and was appointed as a certified teacher, and after completing her regular service, she volunteered for six years in the IDF. In May 1975 she volunteered again for the permanent army. Among her duties are the head of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Head of the Bureau of the IDF Spokesperson’s Office, Head of the Bureau of the National Security College, and the Office of the IDF Spokesperson. An experienced veteran officer. She is very familiar with the profession and is doing her job well, “she says. In summaries of interviews with her, she wrote: “The officer functioned in the past and in the present in an extraordinary manner and received great appreciation from her commanders.” Brig. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Even, who was the IDF Spokesperson, noted: “The first is that most of the others were involved in what was going on in the unit and in the army. Her work as an officer has become a central part of her life, and she has become an exemplary example of caring, dedication, and especially identification with the role. When Karni dealt with IDF spokesmen, Karni was the IDF spokesman. On that day I mentioned her first. “On February 27, 1989, Karni fell during her service and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul, leaving a sister, Edna, in a letter of condolences to the family. “Karni, of blessed memory, served in the past as head of an office in the UN liaison unit, at the National Security College, and in most of the time in the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, in which she stood alongside senior commanders and performed her duties faithfully, with dedication and efficiency. Her friends published a booklet in her memory that included things about her image.
