Omer, Assaf

Omer, Assaf

Son of Binyamin and Shulamit. He was born on the 28th of Adar I, 1932, in Mishmar Ha’emek. The parents are members of the kibbutz. He completed his studies at the local educational institution and belonged to the Ha – Shomer ha – Tsa’ir youth movement. Had a thoughtful and sensitive mind and sometimes tended to find himself in music. He was drafted into the IDF in August 1950 and served in the Gadna unit. By nature, he hated the war, which he had time to see and see during the War of Independence, while the battles were taking place near his home, but he willingly and enthusiastically bore the burden of security and defense. Simple in his manner and humble, he would play every role assigned to him – beginning as an apprentice and then as a guide – out of simplicity and loyalty. When he was given the opportunity to take a parachute training course, he was among the first volunteers, and after training, out of joy and alertness, he received the paratrooper sergeant. During the period of his service, he studied and completed his studies and volunteered to train in the youth battalions. Assaf was also sent to an officer’s course, but one day he was called upon to renew his parachutes and he received this call with great enthusiasm. He fell in the line of duty on 7 October 1951. He was brought to rest in the kibbutz cemetery, and the booklet “Afakim” (August 1954) was devoted entirely to his diary and diaries.
