Olami, Jacob
Son of Hanna and Yehoshua was born in Tel Aviv on April 14, 1929. He studied at the Alliance School and graduated with honors, then moved to the Herzliya Gymnasium, where he became addicted to studies and sports, (Expanded physical education), and was interested in building gliders. Jacob was a music lover and studied at the same time as his studies. On July 30, 1944, he was arrested in Tel Aviv during the curfew imposed by the Mandatory authorities and transferred to Rafah. His slogan was: “No one will run away like me!” He rejected his parents’ proposal to travel abroad to study in the army and decided to fulfill his obligation to protect the country. As soon as he passed the matriculation exams, he took up the service in Notarot. He took part in defending Holon and securing the road to the settlements. On the 22nd of Shvat 5708 (22.1.1948) Mishmar, seven guards, left an open van from Holon to inspect the road to Jerusalem and secure the passage of a convoy. Near the entrance to Yazur they found the road blocked and encountered fire from an Arab ambush. The van was hit and set on fire, the guards were forced to abandon him, took cover on the side of the road and fought against better enemy forces until they all fell. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak. Remember it was uploaded to the file “Shiva”. Close to the place where he fell, the Moshav Mishmar Hashiva was established in memory of him and his friends.
