Nussbaum, Moshe

Son of Deborah and Yaakov. He was born on September 24, 1921 in Lvov, Poland. In 1934 he immigrated to Palestine with his mother and sister. As a child, he was educated in a home full of Jewish tradition. He graduated from the Tachkemoni elementary school and then went on to high school, but due to a difficult financial situation at home, he was forced to go out to work and help support his family. His first work was as an apprentice in the “Achdut” printing press. During this period he joined Hashomer Hatzair and the Haganah. On 27 Nisan, May 1, 1941, he joined the British Army, the Hebrew transport unit 462, where he served as a corporal, and on that day, he was with members of his unit on the ship “Aryanpura” on its way from Alexandria to Malta to join the battle of the Allies on the Italian front. The ship was bombed by German planes and sank shortly thereafter, with hundreds of soldiers from the transport unit descending into the depths of the ocean. In the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem is a ship-shaped memorial. At the bottom, the names of the fallen are engraved.
