Nisht, Nachum
Son of Rachel and Baruch, was born on the 28th of Kislev, December 29, 1921 in the city of Krynick, Poland. He studied there, at the “Tarbut” school. Nachum immigrated to Israel in 1933, and continued his studies in the Geva and Ein Harod schools. After completing his studies, he began working in Geva, and was active in the Haganah. During the Second World War, he enlisted in the army, and served in the driver’s unit of the Eighth camp. He read many books in the Bible, dreamed of studying, and saw special importance in listening to music in the desert. He was also interested in sports. He was very sentimental. Nachum served in Egypt, Libya, Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Italy. In a road accident near Benghazi, he suffered serious wounds, and spent six months in the hospital. “The war is not yet over,” he claimed, and stayed in the army for another year. He was very angry that volunteering for the newly formed Jewish Brigade was not proceeding as fast as he expected. “How much human life has been lost in vain,” he grumbled. “How many millions were invested in it, millions that would have been beneficial to both sides, if they were taken out without war.” Later, when he saw the British government’s attitude toward the Jews, he could not continue to serve in the British army. When he was released, he returned to the Geva group, and was accepted as a member. He rejected a proposal to move to town and work as a clerk, because “there is a need, first of all, for farmers.” Nachum did not seek a comfortable and easy life for himself, he was a man of duty, fulfilling his body and soul. When the War of Independence broke out, he was drafted into the army. On the morning of the 8th of Adar 2, March 19, 1948, a platoon from the Golani Brigade left an ambush on the Gilboa, near the village of Norris. He was among the first wounded, but as usual he did not leave the campaign. “I can still act,” he said, and continued until he fell. He was laid to rest in the cemetery, in Geva.
