After completing the course he was assigned to an artillery battalion in the Golan Heights. On August 16, 1988, Yaakov was killed while on a field trip when he had to cross a pool of water while crossing the pool, nature and all efforts to save him, The cemetery in Or Akiva left behind his parents and three brothers – son of-Zion, Meir and Noah – in a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Yaakov was a model soldier.
