Nahum, Shalom (Avnery)

Son of Dan and Menahem, was born on the 14th Iyar, May 24, 1929 in Aden. In 1932, when he was three years old, he immigrated to Israel with his parents. After graduating, he worked in a factory for metal casting. He was a member of the Irgun underground and active in the war against the British and in the smuggling of weapons. From the outbreak of the War of Independence, Shalom devoted his nights to guarding the borders of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Eventually he left his job and went to guard full time. Shalom fell on the 20th of Nissan, April 30, 1948, during a battle in Manshiyya, by a bomb that the British had thrown at his position. Ten days before he left his parents’ home, he asked his parents not to worry; they should just take care of his younger brothers. He was brought to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
