Moshiyov, Gershon

Moshiyov, Gershon

Son of Rishel and Samuel. He was born on January 29, 1913 in Jerusalem, the seventh generation in the country. He studied at the Tachkemoni elementary school and later at the Beit Hakerem Teachers’ Seminary and at the Hebrew University, where he graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. His main subject of specialization was the physiology of the plant. In this field he published scientific articles and studies. He was active in the “Wanderers” Association, which covered the country throughout its length and breadth, and was one of the founders of the Marxist circles in Jerusalem – Poalei Zion Left – and a member of their central committee. From the age of 16 he was also an active member of the Haganah. On his academic activity, one of the members said, “At the university he found himself, here he came to ‘the sources’ – and his passion for Gaza was valid … Even at night he was preoccupied with his experiences and research … He would not hesitate in the lab to come to the aid of every student, and the edges of his apron swirl and add something broad and energetic to his broad image, anyway, full of unknown powers … ” In August 1936 he volunteered to guard around Jerusalem. One night an Arab gang attacked the Kiryat Anavim group. The “wanderer” under the command of Yitzhak Sadeh repulsed the attack, and Gershon, who was in the defenders, was seriously injured. Two days later, on 2 Elul, August 20, 1936, he died of his wounds and was brought to eternal rest on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. He left his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
