Morduch, Salman

Salman, son of Dori and Moshe, was born in 1930 in Kurdistan and immigrated to Israel with all his family in 1950, when he was twenty years old. As a child, Salman was not allowed to attend school. In retrospect, he regretted that this had happened to him, but he tried to correct the distortion in the purchase of knowledge and wisdom of life from daily experience. Two brothers were Salman, Yitzhak and Avraham, and two sisters – Aziza and Fauma. They say that Salman was a loyal son and devoted to his parents and a model brother. He never refused to help others, and was known among his friends as honest and conscientious. He was a sports fan, liked to watch football matches and did not miss an interesting game. It was quiet, but in joy he excited his friends and family, and contributed to creating a warm and cordial atmosphere. In 1953, when he was 23 years old, he married his chosen son, Sito. The young couple settled in Nes-Harim, in the Jerusalem corridor. A year later, his eldest son, Mordechai, was born. It is hard to imagine Salman’s joy and distracted by the birth of their young son. The couple’s lives were not easy: they lived barely and did not know luxury, but Salman was determined to give his children an education he had not had as a child in Kurdistan. Salman was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in late January 1964, when he was a thirty-four-year-old father of children and his physical fitness was poor, but Salman sought to contribute, if only slightly, to the security of the state. In June 1967, he was awarded the “Six Day War.” In September 1968, he was placed in the Haganah unit and was called for periods of reserve duty. Salman did his job well, and even when the days of his military service were too much for family life, he did not complain. Seven children were born to Selman and Sito: five sons and two daughters. Salman did not see the birth of his eighth son, Shlomo. During the Yom Kippur War, Salman served in the Haganah unit, which combed the city of Jerusalem and its environs, maintaining order and security, and carrying out his impeccable tasks, known among his friends as a man whose best qualities were revealed during difficult times. Served on his unit and on the 17th of Tevet 5737 (17.1.1974), died suddenly in the performance of his duties, was brought to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl and left behind a pregnant wife and seven children. The Morduch family and the Defense Ministry planted one tree in memory of Salman in the Magenim Forest near the Kennedy Forest in the Jerusalem hills.
