Mordekowitz, Aryeh


He was born in 1913 in Skrubowa, on a farm near Baranovich, in white Russia, grew up in an agricultural environment, was known for his love of the trees, the river and the countryside, and expressed his feelings in song and music. He moved to the settlement of Galil Slonim-Nesviz, then joined the “BaMaleh” nucleus and went to a training center in Zaklikov, where his pioneering spirit and his ability to integrate well into society were revealed, as well as the problems of the people, general human problems, socialist ideas and the world labor movement. A group of friends went up to complete the “Sharon” group, and Aryeh was among them He joined the “Ba-Ma’aleh” group in 1934. He joined the “Hasharon” group in 1934, but at the end of wandering and deliberation he joined the “Me’aleh” group, which was temporarily in Kiryat Ono. On the morning of 5 Kislev, 9.11.1937, he left with three other members and was a carpenter in the lands of the Jewish National Fund in the vicinity of the ” Har haRuah, ” 5 km from Kiryat Anavim. When the five arrived, they were surrounded by an armed Arab gang that attacked them with crossfire. All five were killed. He was 24 years old when he fell. The dead were laid to rest in the Kiryat Anavim cemetery. In the “Ha’aretz” newspaper of November 15, 1937, a list was published in his memory. In 1953 Aryeh and his friends were transferred to the cemetery in Kibbutz Ma’aleh Hahamisha, which is named after them.
