Moravia, Marco


Son of Gladis and Nissim Shimon was born on 28.8.1926 in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and completed an elementary school there. In 1945 he immigrated to Israel and immediately joined the Jewish Brigade. After his discharge from the army he worked in the British army camp in Kiryat Motzkin and later at the “Kol Bo” store in Haifa. In April 1948 he enlisted in the army, participated in the occupation of Rosh Hanikra, in the battles in Jenin and in the conquest of Birwa. He used to say: “We are fighting today for a better future, and today we write history.” Marco fell in battle on Birva on June 24, 1948, during the counter-attack on the village, after it was conquered by the enemy. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Nahariya.
