Monk, Ofer

Monk, Ofer

Son of Uri and Malka, members of Kibbutz Hahotrim. He was born on December 5, 1946 in Haifa. In the kibbutz he completed elementary and high school, and later studied in a garage for machines. He always liked to deal with all kinds of small inventions in the electric field and mechanics. He belonged to the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed movement. He was drafted into the IDF in November 1965. He served in the Nahal command and was sent to a sabotage course and was then trained in this field. He had noble qualities and his subordinates loved him for it. He was also loved for his sense of humor, for he had the courage and the confidence in his Lev. He was always supportive of his parents and was willing to lend a hand to his friends and all his actions were done quietly and with pleasure. Took his role seriously and filled it faithfully both with training and with battle. Was in regular service at the outbreak of the Six-Day War. The unit was determined to occupy the positions of Umm Kataf, one of the strongest outposts on the peninsula. And it controls the Nizzana-El Arish road in the direction of the canal. The unit advanced through the sands and climbed the post from the wing to surprise and not to be in its front fire. When the position was liquidated, at around 2:00 AM, the unit received another task and Ofer was sent back from the position key to the flamethrower he had operated earlier. And thus enabled the completion of the clearing of the entire outpost. But when he got there he was hit by the bullet of an injured Egyptian soldier from a bunker and that was how he died; It was the second day of the fighting, on the 27th of Iyar 5727 (June 6, 1967). He served as a sabotage sergeant and the commander of the sabotage company said: “I have never met a boy and a soldier so devoted.” He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Hahotrim. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death, his kibbutz issued a leaflet in memory of him and on the first anniversary of his death, the kibbutz published a booklet in his memory and the memory of his friend Yoav Haruvi. The “Negev Brigade in the Campaign” presents a description of three terrorists who volunteered to destroy a machine-gun position – one of them was Ofer, and his memory was mentioned in the booklet “The War of the Six Day War.” “Nachal Negev in the Campaign” was dedicated to several pages.
