Modiano, Shaul

Son of Frida and Pinchas. He was born on October 20, 1965 in Moshav Megadim. He began his studies at the Nir Etzion Regional Elementary School on the Carmel coast and continued with the automotive mechanics course at the Kfar Galim Agricultural High School. At the end of 11th grade, he participated in the Gadna diving course, when he dreamed of joining the naval commando. Indeed, Shaul fulfilled this aspiration. He loved the country and the homeland and he shared this love with the youth in the moshav, on trips along the length and breadth of the country in order to experience, to see and learn our country. At the age of twelve, he wrote to himself in one of his diaries: “To your descendants I will give the land and not the PLO … and certainly not divide Jerusalem.” At the beginning of February 1984 Shaul was drafted into the IDF and volunteered for an elite unit in the navy. Shaul underwent infantry recruits, a parachuting course, a squad commanders’ course and reached the final stage in the naval commando unit and was trained as a combat diver. His commanders testified that he had a natural leadership and was acceptable to all his classmates. On the 17th of Tammuz 5775 (May 2, 1985) Shaul died of cardiac arrest. He was brought to eternal rest at the Hof Hacarmel military cemetery in Haifa and his tombstone was engraved “while he was performing his duty.” He was twenty years old when he fell. Survived by his parents, two sisters – Rivka and her victories, and brother Assaf. Shaul was promoted to the rank of sergeant after his death … In a condolence letter to the family, the unit commander wrote: “… Shaul volunteered for the unit and was about to finish his training course in October. This course, which is one of the most difficult in the IDF, presented your son with very few demands that he was able to meet, and he was exemplary. His family commemorated a field race with runners from running clubs. The Shaul race is held every year on the day of the communion with Shaul. Maj. Gen. (ret.) Ami Ayalon, Dr. Chen Shapira, Navy Casualties Officer, Batya and many others assisted the family in its struggle to introduce an ultrasound device to monitor the soldiers regularly in order to prevent the recurrence of similar deaths in the future. In response to Shaul’s death, Navy Commander Maj. Gen.
