Meshi (Ziden), Herzl (Henick)

Herzl, son of Hanna-Tova and Moshe (Ziden) Meshi, was born in 1912 in Warsaw (which in those days belonged to Russia). He graduated from high school and made a living as a tailor. He served two years in the Polish army and with the Nazi invasion of Poland, he fled to Russia. After the Stalin-Sikorsky agreement, he joined the Anders Army and arrived in Israel. He was full of energy, full of life and loyalty to the homeland. As a veteran soldier he joined the defenders of Jerusalem at the outbreak of the War of Independence and took part in several battles at the outskirts of the city. One day he was seriously injured in the “Batei Mandelbaum” and when he was transferred to Hadassah, it became clear that he could no longer be saved. He was tortured for two and a half months until he died of his wounds on 1 Tishrei, October 4, 1948. He was buried in Sheikh Bader A. He was survived by his wife, Malka-Reina, a son and a daughter. On 30.8.1950, he was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
