Mendelssohn, Yaakov (“Kobi”)


Son of David and Bella. He was born on the eve of Rosh Hashanah 5708 (14.9.1947) in Afula, and lived with his parents in Kibbutz Alonim until 1951. In the first two years of school he attended elementary school in Yavne’el, His parents moved to Neve Sha’anan in Haifa, where he studied at the Be’eri Elementary School in Ramot-Remez, where he was very energetic and loved by his friends and teachers, especially when he completed his elementary studies, and attended a vocational school in Kiryat Shprinzak Who was in Haifa, took part in the Air Force Division and was a model builder. From an early age, he belonged to the local Mahanot Haolim movement. A special experience for him was an exit to the camp, and his place was always among the first marchers. In the course of his military service Yaakov was recruited with the Sorek group to the Nahal (September 1965), which was to join the Palmach Tzuba kibbutz. At the end of the basic training period, he underwent a platoon commander’s course, joined the parachuting Nahal Brigade and was so proud. When he came home for a visit he would often tell his impressions and share his experiences with his audience. In the army he grew up, became aware of what was happening in the community and was ready to read. At the outbreak of the Six-Day War, Yaakov fought the breakthrough in Rafah, and on the following day, on the 27th of Iyar 5727 (June 6, 1967), on the second day of the battles, he fell in Khan Yunis; This was after the occupation of Gaza during the purification of Chen Yunis when he was raised and injured by a sniper. Was brought to rest at the military emergency cemetery in Be’eri and was later transferred to the eternal rest of the military cemetery in Haifa. The parents published a booklet in his memory bearing his name.
