Mendel, Mordechai (Foto)


Son of Tzili and Gedaliah was born on September 14, 1925, in the city of Tornavni, Romania. He attended elementary school and later worked as a shoemaker. He managed to survive the horrors of the Holocaust, and in 1947 he boarded the Pan-York ship, which was captured by the British and its passengers were exiled to Cyprus. In Cyprus Mordechai worked as a guide and commander of a class in the underground Hagana training. In 1948, he immigrated to Eretz Israel in a convoy of the Youth Aliyah and on his way to the Palmach, he served in the Yiftach Brigade and participated in the battles of Nebi Yusha, Tel-Qadi, Castel, Latrun, Burma, Jerusalem, In the Battle of the Lod Police, before the final victory in the city, Mordechai fell on the 4th of Tammuz 5708 (11.7.1948). He was buried in Ben Shemen. On the 1st of Shvat, 5708 (8.1.1951), he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem
