Melamed, Na’aman (Zisha)


Son of Malka and Yosef, was born in 1922 in the city of Kovel, then in eastern Poland, and studied in a “cheder” and an elementary school. At the age of 8, he was orphaned from his mother. In 1933 he immigrated to Israel to his brother and attended the “Netzach Israel” school in Haifa. After graduating he worked as a locksmith. He was a very active youth and joined the “Noar Haoved”, the Gadna and the “HaPoel” marine unit, all on his own initiative, without the knowledge of his brother’s family, and continued to study at evening classes. He was aware of everything that was going on in the Yishuv, and he wrote stories about the love of the people and the homeland and gathered them to read at every opportunity. In the garage and in the evenings, he completed his studies at the vocational school of the Technion, where he found no satisfaction in working in the garage In the winter of 1948, when the War of Independence broke out following the United Nations General Assembly resolution of 29 November 1947 on the partition of the country, he worked in the armored vehicles on buses and at night, He was sent to a new position on Omar al-Mukhtar Street, near a murderers’ nest, and when an Arab broke into the post, Na’aman fought with him, To the Rothschild Hospital and died four hours later, on the 7th of Adar 5748 (March 27, 1948). He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa.
