Melamed, Jacob


Son of Pnina and Avraham, was born on September 16, 1928 in Jerusalem, and from the age of six he lived in Moshav Beit Hanan, where he completed elementary school and two continuing classes, and later participated in a seminar organized by the Moshav Movement in Jerusalem. He loves the tree and talks in his farm and is connected to the land and to work. From Bar Mitzvah age onward he was active in training He worked in his parents’ farm and succeeded in every job, and when his parents began to build their home, he also participated in the construction as a good builder, and he worked as a mechanic and a tractor operator. And on May 9, 1948, he enlisted in full service as a driver in the armored corps, and there was no limit to his joy and enthusiasm when the half-tracks arrived and he was appointed driver of one of them. Yaakov introduced various improvements and refinements, places for sitting and placing objects, and during his last visit he showed up in his village with the half-track for a few hours. Yaakov participated as a half-track driver in Operation son of-Nun II, the second attack on the Latrun Regiment in Latrun, where he was caught in the armored vehicle in the police station to cover the retreat of his comrades. He fell on the 30th of May 1948. On the 17th of Cheshvan 5706 (17.11.1949), he was brought to rest with the rest of Latrun, at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
